In October of 2000, the Eighth Virginia Infantry was honored by a visit to our camp at Waterford by General Charles "Chuck" Hillsman, Commander of Longstreet's Corps.   The General and his Lady were touring the village and stopped in to greet his friends, the Eighth Virginia.  Chuck is pictured here in front of the Surgeon's tent.  A little over two months after this picture was taken, General Charles "Chuck" Hillsman "crossed over the river" because of complications brought on by cancer.

Private Hillsman is remembered, by yours truly, from his (Chuck's) very first reenactment, an event hosted by the Eighth Virginia.  From that event, Chuck, because of his knowledge, his pleasant personality, his willingness to listen and resolve, his respect for rank, advanced in rank to become Commander of one of the finest bodies of men in the field, Longstreet's Corps.

General Hillsman was never out of reach for anyone, from private to sergeant to colonel.  He was always there for everyone.  For those of you that did not have the opportunity of meeting Chuck, now you have a face to put with his name when it comes up in conversation.

I remain your obedient servant,
Dave Purschwitz

Time for Reenactors to Get in Shape

Now is a good time to get in shape for the upcoming season.  Walk a little more each day.  Snack on fruit and veggies and drink more water.  Consider water to be the miracle tonic. Studies show that the people almost always go through the day in a dehydrated state.  Drinking water, even when you don't think you need it is good for your body.

This year there will be several 145th Anniversary Events.  Keep in mind those that interest you in preparation for the yearly unit meeting.

We are very fortunate to have several new members in the 8th Virginia.  We should always keep a focus on our efforts to recruit.  Give thought to your period presentation: Civilians in the crowd, bugle call and or drum roll, flag presentation from ladies, sweethearts sorry to see loved one go, sign-up sheet/table, speeches from local politician-commander-preacher, new recruits drilled on basics, oath, etc.  Someone is always watching who might be wanting to get into the hobby.  The 8th Virginia F&I, has been credited for  many years for its attention to period detail, historical accuracy and being recognized a quality manual of arms drill unit.  Our reputation has resulted in the unit being invited to many select events and functions.  Keep up the good work 8th!!

After a couple of months of not being able to access the administrative control on our web site it is now  updated.  There was a computer problem that has hopefully been resolved so let Gill Thompson know of any errors or changes.  Also keep in mind that Gill failed "Graphic Design" so your input is greatly appreciated. Email to Gill any of your digital pictures, human interest stories, historical Facts, reenactment event updates, or other appropriate information for publication to our site.  Gill.Thompson@comcast.net

History articles are welcome for publication on the 8th Virginia web site.  If you have articles of historic significance please send them to either Gill Thompson or to Tom Dunn.
