The
8th Virginia Memorial Hall is located in Hickory Grove, Virginia
off Route 15 approximately seven miles south of Haymarket.
The
cornerstone was laid on September 28th 1914 and it contains a handsomely
carved inscription dedicating the building to the 8th Virginia
Regiment and "to the Heroes who fought and fell" under that command.
Several items were put into the stone before it was placed in position.
This includes;
- Sept. 25, 1914 copy of the Baltimore
Sun;

- January
27, 1912 Alexandria Gazette;
- September 25, 1914
Manassas
Journal;
- September 18, 1914
Loudoun Mirror;
- Copy of
the Psalms, that was sent with
thanks for kindness rendered to Miss Annie
Hutchison, of "Peach Orchard" from Camp Mason;
- Hundred Dollar Confederate bill;
- English one-penny coin of 1876;
- American cent of 1899;
- complete roster of the Eighth Virginia
Regiment;
- Roster of Eighth Virginia veterans still
living;
- Roster of Company D, Champe Rifles;
- Roster of Eighth Virginia U.D.C. Chapter;
Original Stained Glass Window
- Copy of a Poem written for the occasion by
Miss Alice Maude Ewell.
The cornerstone is currently in position, but
it is believed that several years ago it had been moved (broken into) and
the items were removed to possibly never be seen again. The old Veterans of
the 8th Virginia used the Hall for their meetings and picnics.
Eighth Virginia Founder, Dave Purschwitz once talked to a "Son" who tended
the Veterans horses while they met inside. He stated that every so often
some of the "old boys" would come out, flip up the seat on a buggy, pull out
a jug, share it amongst them, and after a few swallows return to the
meeting. The ladies, of course, would never know.
