Answer to Trivia Question:
The total
regimental strength is difficult to determine with complete accuracy.
However, Col. Hunton placed the number at 206 who actually lined up for
the charge, with but 10 fit for duty that evening.
Randolph Shotwell a participant,
gives the number engaged at 189 with 15 untouched. A later study
of the muster rolls suggested that approximately 212 men were present
that morning but this might have included cooks, baggage guards or
medical people.
A more scientific study resulted in
39 killed, 79 wounded and 60 missing for a total of 179.
It was estimated that the 8th
Virginia suffered an 86% loss during this one battle.
